Given the virtual nature of SHARP 2021, the programme will be designed in accordance with the following formats to facilitate discussion. The live discussions will be hosted on the Zoom platform.
Pre-organized live panel
Two speakers will give formal 20-minute papers on a related theme or methodology, followed by moderated discussion (60 minutes total).
Pre-organized pre-recorded panel
Two speakers will circulate pre-recorded videos of 15-20 minutes length. The discussion on Zoom will consist of brief comments by the paper authors, and the focus will be on moderated discussion (60 minutes total).
Roundtables may consist of three or more participants and a moderator, and focus on questions related to research, teaching, or other aspects of the broader field of book history. Although the number of participants is not strictly limited, all roundtables will last one hour.
SHARP Research Lab
Intensive discussion of pre-circulated papers on a shared theme.
A lab leader will choose the theme and recruit lab contributors (by circulating a CfP, for example) and then act as moderator during the live discussion session. Participants' papers (of no more than 6,000 words) will be circulated in advance among registered conference participants. The lab discussion session will be between 90 minutes (for 3 papers) and 120 minutes (for 4 papers) long.
Advanced MA students and PhD students may participate in our 5-1-5 sessions, which will offer, per session, five speakers the opportunity to share 1 slide about their ongoing project (e.g. PhD project) in exactly 5 minutes. The discussions will be moderated by a chair (session length: 60 minutes total).
We are also open to considering other options that are workable in a 60-minute virtual timeframe.
